Sustainable Practice & Climate Justice — Creative Travel Africa

Deep access into sustainable best practice.

Sustainable practice, climate change, and environmental justice form the basis of our academic immersions, designed for those seeking real-world solutions on the continent.

We connect global leaders to the grassroots and corporate innovations defining African sustainability.

Through our extensive networks, we provide deep access for corporate sustainability managers and university study-abroad programmes. We explore how development and conservation intersect in the African context.

12 Days – Sustainability Immersions – Biodynamic Agriculture – Safari

"This 12-day programme is an intensive exploration of cities in transition, focusing on sustainability in the Global South. From the urban farming and water systems of Cape Town to the biodynamic practices of the Winelands and the wilderness conservation of Kruger National Park, we examine the complexities of urban development, food security, and environmental stewardship."

Part One

Cape Town: Urban Sustainability and History

Day 1-3. City Origins and Water

After arrivals in Cape Town, we begin with a peninsula route exploring the coastal geography. We dedicate time to understanding the city's economic building blocks, from indigenous bartering systems to modern trade. A highlight is the exploration of water as a critical urban resource, visiting the Oranjezicht City Farm, which utilizes a centralized water distribution system fed by mountain springs, mirroring early colonial farming designs.

Day 4-6. Lectures and Social Transformation

Moving to the Winelands, we engage with the academic core of the programme at the Sustainability Institute. Lectures led by Professor Mark Swilling and Edgar Pieterse provide a framework for understanding African cities. These sessions are balanced with excursions to the District Six Museum to unpack the history of forced removals and the contemporary impacts of spatial inequality. We also focus on food security with visits to Abalimi Bezekhaya's urban farming projects in Khayelitsha, addressing sustainable lifestyles and poverty alleviation.

Part Two

The Winelands: Biodynamic Systems

Day 7-8. Ecology and Production

The final phase in the Cape focuses on biodynamic wine production. At Avondale Wine Estate, we participate in an eco-tour that examines the fundamentals of soil health, climate, and non-chemical farming. We analyze how regenerated ecosystems contribute to quality production, moving beyond the traditional tourism gaze to understand the operational realities of sustainable estates.

Wilderness and Urban Innovation

Day 9-12. Wilderness Conservation and City Futures

The program shifts to the Kruger National Park for a wilderness immersion, allowing participants to contrast urban sustainability challenges with large-scale wildlife conservation. The journey concludes in Johannesburg, staying in the Maboneng precinct. This final stop offers a look at Johannesburg as a hip, young, and integrated hub, contrasting with the coastal history explored earlier in the program.

Logistics

Accommodation includes the Sunsquare Hotel in Cape Town, the Spier Hotel and de Oude Werf in Stellenbosch, and Kruger Shalati in Kruger. Transport throughout the program is facilitated by dedicated guides, using a mix of private vehicles and the MyCiti bus system where appropriate for city integration.
